These concerns stem from being informed by last Friday’s stop, question and search activity that formed part of the 60 Days of Action on Crime and Road Safety Days.

The No 2 District operatives were targeting secondary schools in the area since Form 3 students were sitting for their final examinations. No 2 district officer commanding, Senior Superintendent Paul Oketsang told The Monitor that in the past they received sporadic reports in which students were involved in fights that resulted in fatal stabbings.

Oketsang stated that the search targeted Patikwane Junior Secondary School (JSS) in Mabeleapudi, and Mmaphula and Bonwatlou junior secondary schools in Palaye and Serule respectively.

“Learners at Patikwane JSS were found in possession of two Okapi knives, a mobile phone and a saw while three knives, five scissors and four forks were found in possession of students at Mmaphula JSS and three Okapi knives and a pair of scissors were found in possession of learners at Bonwatlou JSS. This concerns us because these learners are part of the society and might have been involved in some theft incidents or any other criminal activities,” he said.

Oketsang said the possession of offensive weapons worries them because they have observed that students who carry them appear to have the confidence to fight back when they are involved in misunderstandings.
