According to Selebi Phikwe Police Station commander, Nicholas Kadiatla, the 17-year-old boy was arrested last week on the school premises.

He said that the Form 5 boarding student was caught red-handed with eight sachets of a green-like substance suspected to be dagga. “We are still investigating how the illegal substance has reached the school premises,” he added.

Kadiatla indicated that a teacher caught the student smoking dagga in the storeroom during lessons. He elaborated that the teacher caught scent of weird smell coming from the storeroom in the middle of a lesson.

Upon arrival at the storeroom, the teacher found the boy smoking the suspicious green-like substance. Selebi Phikwe police chief said that they have engaged social workers and parents on the matter since the student is still a juvenile.

Police are yet to confirm if the student was distributing the suspected substance or not. In the past, there has been a growing concern about students selling dagga on the school premises.

Early this year in March another male student aged 17 at Swaneng Senior Secondary School was nabbed for drug possession. The student was caught with eight sachets of marijuana and four wrapped pieces of dagga. The police were suspecting that the student might have been selling drugs to other learners.
