The man tried in vain to explain to the court how and why he viciously attacked his girlfriend almost amputating her.

The man, Xola Sidney Sodaba cut a lonely figure behind the dock, looking lost as he appeared for his arraignment for unlawfully assaulting Puseletso Mosimakoko with a pick handle.

His charge sheet was read out to him and his particulars of offence are that: “On September 19 at Rakhuna village, he unlawfully assaulted Puseletso Mosimakoko with a pick handle and caused fractures on her left leg and right hand.” When applying for a further remand the Police told the court that the matter was fairly fresh and that the victim was currently in Princess Marina Hospital in critical condition.

The court was told that she suffered internal bleeding and was due for an emergency operation to save her life.

For his defence, when asked if he had anything to say the accused told the court he was only defending himself from his angry girlfriend who was attacking him with a bottle.

In the end, Lobatse Chief Magistrate Gofaone Morweng denied the man bail and is due back to court on October 10 for a status update and a brief on his victim’s medical condition.
