According to Kazungula Police Station commander, Phetogo Phillimon on Thursday morning, three police officers were threatened by a herd of elephants while they were on duty tracking culprits near Letsoma village.

He highlighted that the elephants were travelling with their calves and some elephants which were on the other side of the trail attacked the officers. He said that the officers then shot one of the elephants killing it with their rifles.

Phillimon added that no one sustained injuries in the attack and subsequent shooting. He indicated that the three police officers were chasing two culprits who allegedly broke into homes at Kasane’s Plateau area.

The break-in suspects allegedly stole household items worth P29,650 that included electronic devices such as laptops and television sets. The station commander added the police officer lost track of the culprits following the shootout. “The culprit’s tracks proved that they hid behind the bush near the elephant herd at the time and escaped during the police shooting.

The culprits are still at large,” he added. Phillimon said the suspects remain unknown and pleaded with information which can be helpful to their investigations.
