The incident took place on Friday just a day after the ‘E Seng Mo Ngwaneng’ campaign came to an end in Letlhakane and surrounding areas.

The campaign is geared towards putting an end to sexual exploitation, violence and abuse, especially against children. Letlhakane Police Station commander, Michael Maphephu confirmed that they arrested the herdsman for allegedly murdering the woman, aged between 20 and 22, on Saturday morning.

He said that workers of a supermarket discovered the body of the young woman near Mokubilo Filling Station. He indicated that the workers were doing their morning routines and came across the lifeless body which was hidden behind some storage containers.

It is alleged the police arrested the man, who was on the run barefooted along Xamma settlement which is a few kilometres away from Mokubilo village. Maphephu said they suspect the culprit used a sharp object to stab the deceased on the forehead.

“We are still yet to establish the relationship between the suspect and the deceased and what exactly transpired between the two,” added the Letlhakane police chief. He emphasised that gender-based violence (GBV) remains a concern in their policing area as the incident took place just a day after the ‘E Seng Mo Ngwaneng’ campaign came to an end. Therefore, he shared that there was a need for the campaign to be extended to settlements as most of the GVB takes place in such areas. The suspect will appear before Letlhakane Magistrate's Court whilst investigations on the matter continue.
