He first attempted in 2015 following the death of Isaac Davids. Though he lost, Matlou remained visible in the party and constituency as an activist as well as campaign manager for former legislator Moagi Molebatsi.

The late Member of Parliament, Davids, won the constituency in the 2014 General Election while a member of the UDC but later crossed the floor to join the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP). Unfortunately, he would not see his term to the end as his herdboys murdered him.

During the 2018 BNF primaries, Molebatsi garnered 795 votes while Matlou came second with 363 votes and close behind him was Mothusi Tlhowe with 338 votes. While he is cagey, indications are that Matlou is hard at work on the ground and enjoys support for his contributions to the party.

When reached for comment about his interest to stand for the MP seat for the BNF/UDC, Matlou could only say, “I am humbled by the affirmation of my fellow constituents if they are minded to believe I am worthy to represent them. I am happy to consider applying my mind to the matter in the fullness of time". When pressed for further clarity he said: “I do value public service and appreciate the value it brings to my community.

You may also be aware I unsuccessfully stood for the BNF primary elections in 2018 following the demise of Honourable Davids. I, thereafter, led as constituency campaign manager, a successful campaign and wrested the constituency from the ruling party. So it may not be far-fetched an idea to ponder standing in 2024.

Of course, being a disciplined member of the BNF, I should also hasten to say we are well aware of set procedures should any such interests to stand be elicited." Reportedly, the 2019 UDC candidate and former MP, Molebatsi indicated and confirmed to party faithfuls within the constituency that he is not available to stand for 2024 as he believes he has served.

Word has it that he too anointed low comrade Matlou as the rightful candidate. He was particularly grateful for his sustained support since the 2018 By-Election and 2019 General Election.
