The accident took place on Saturday morning at Shashe Bridge along A1 road. Tonota Station Commander Superintendent Oteng Ngada confirmed the incident.

He said the fatal accident involving a BMV carrying six people heading towards the south hit capstones and overturned, killing the driver and a passenger instantly.

Ngada indicated that the remaining four passengers sustained serious injuries and are currently hospitalised at Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital (NRH). He said the deceased are males aged 35 and 45 years of Tonota Manyanda and Tholo wards respectively.

The other passengers are also from Tonota. “Two surviving passengers are siblings, a brother and a sister and all were travelling from Shashe Bridge village back to Tonota where they reside,” said the Tonota police boss.

He said they suspected that the deceased and surviving persons were travelling back to their respective homes from a night out. The police boss said investigations are still ongoing to find out what could have transpired and led to the horrific accident.

He said the identities of the deceased persons will be withheld until their next of kin are notified. Ngada encouraged road users to be cautious when driving so that they can reach their destination safely and alive.
