Addressing the audience on Tuesday this week at a three-day informal economy roundtable dialogue, Molokwe said he has feedback from the business community in the district on how to grow and make a meaningful contribution to the country’s economy.

“Our District Local Economic Development strategy is clear on the support that we should give to yourselves in order to grow businesses in the district. This will also benefit us in the reduction of the unemployment rate which is at its highest in the district,” he said.

“I call on all government institutions to work together to support local businesses.

I encourage all of you to interrogate the new government procurement system. This system encourages full support of local businesses to the extent of putting a clause that allows businesses to take us to task for not buying local. ” The chairperson added this calls for immediate action by all departments to allocate a larger share of local procurement in their procurement plans.

He said it is high time they copy other districts in reserving a large cake too the locals.

Molokwe also said since COVID -19 hit the country, it left them with scars as it impacted negatively on businesses, and they are still recovering from its effects. He further revealed that the government has put in place many incentives to help and support businesses in their recovery phase.

“With us here today, we have invited various experts/officers who will take you through programmes government has in place to encourage business recovery post-COVID-19.

This is a dialogue as I have mentioned, you will have an opportunity to pitch in, applaud and correct and advise what other initiatives you may wish to be implemented and those we can improve on,” he added.
