Tutume station commander Superintendent Jerry Halahala said the incident took place at Magapatona ward on Monday night.

Halahala stated that it was reported that a child aged three years was found in a deep sleep adding that when the relatives tried to wake the child up, the toddler remained motionless. The relatives ultimately notified the police who took the toddler to Tutume Primary Hospital where he was certified dead by doctors.

Prior to the incident, the station commander stated that the child’s 29-year-old father took him with the permission of the mother, who is his ex-girlfriend. The intention of the 29-year-old was to pay a visit to his mother with the child.

The visit indeed materialised according Halahala. It is suspected that during the visit on Monday night, the 29-year-old then killed his son and fled the scene.

“We suspect that this man killed his son because of the note we found at the crime scene. The note which I cannot read out explained why he allegedly murdered his son,” said Halahala.

The police chief indicated that a day after the murder, the police received a report that the 29-year-old man has committed suicide in Francistown. He concluded that they are waiting for the post-mortem results to determine the exact cause of the death of the child.

Meanwhile, Francistown police acting station commander assistant superintended Douglas Khumalo confirmed that they are investigating an incident whereby a 29-year-old man allegedly committed suicide at Monarch Area 9 location.

He explained that the man was found dead at his friend's rented room on Wednesday morning.

Khumalo could not confirm nor deny whether the deceased person is linked to the Tutume incident. He said that the matter is still fresh, and investigations are still at preliminary stage.
