On June 6, 2022 Khama was supposed to appear before court with his co-accused but he was a no-show and the State was quick to tell court that it would apply for extradition as it had failed to serve him with the charge sheet.

The former president is facing 14 charges as the first former president to face criminal charges post his tenure.

Khama’s attorneys, Ramalepa Attorneys have now indicated that they have not seen or received any notice indicating that the process of extradition by the State has been commenced. “Khama has not been served and there has been no developments yet known to us on the extradition, we are still waiting,” said the attorneys.

Meanwhile, Khama had told Mmegi in an interview after the State’s utterances that he would welcome the extradition as it was going to give him a chance to expose the "lies fabricated against him". "I would very much welcome an extradition request because that would give me and my associates an opportunity to expose the lies and fabrications that President Mokgweetsi Masisi and his cronies have been embarking on against me,” Khama had said.

Khama has been charged with criminal offences, which include amongst others, unlawful possession of a firearm, receiving stolen property, procuring the registration of a firearm by false pretence, aiding and abetting unlawful possession of a firearm and ownership of a firearm not registered in accordance with the Arms and Ammunition Act of 2018.

The case in which he is accused alongside others such as his ally, Isaac Kgosi and suspended Police Commissioner, Keabetswe Makgophe will be back in court on August 30, 2022.
