Confirming the accident, the Tatitown acting station commander, Assistant Superintendent Modise Kgathang said the incident took place on Thursday evening at around 7:30pm.

He added that the accident involved two public mini-buses and a Toyota Dyna, claiming 16 lives and leaving 14 survivors in critical condition. The mini-buses had 27 passengers and a separate driver.

The Tatitown police boss stated that the two mini-buses were travelling from Francistown to Sowa Town and Maitengwe respectively, whereas the Toyota Dyna was travelling in the opposite direction. Kgathang said the Toyota Dyna driver was travelling alone but chose the wrong lane when they collided with the first oncoming public mini-bus.

He further said that the other mini-bus travelling in the same direction collided with the first mini-bus. Both mini-buses then overturned before rolling in opposite directions with the passengers in the two vehicles including their drivers sustained serious injuries while others died. “We attended the scene and all the people involved in the car accident were taken to Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital.

Fourteen people were certified dead upon arrival at the same hospital,” the Tatitown police chief said, further stating that two passed away this morning (Friday).

He shared that the drivers of both mini-buses also passed away, whereas the Toyota Dyna driver is in the intensive care unit. According to the Tatitown police boss, the deceased individuals include 10 men, four women, and two minors (a girl and a boy).

He indicated that the remaining 14 passengers and the Toyota Dyna driver are still hospitalised for the sustained serious injuries. The 14 survivors include nine men, four women, and a minor. Kgathang said that they are yet to determine the cause of the accident as the investigation is ongoing.
