Up for the challenge: Sewawa says the race seeks to raise funds for junior teams

The event is organised by the Orapa Cycling Club and its chairperson, Moagi Sewawa told Mmegi Sport that funds raised from this year’s event will be devoted towards buying cycling equipment for the club’s youth categories from the ages of 14-23.

Orapa Cycling Club has 11 members in the youth category. Sewawa said the money raised from the event will also be channelled towards other initiatives meant to attract more youth within Boteti to join the club. “The emphasis of this year’s event is on the development of the youth in cycling around Boteti.

Proceeds will be used to support the Orapa Cycling Club Youth Development Programme.

Youth cycling in our country is still at the infancy stage and the main contributing factor is monetary constraints since equipment and race participation is expensive,” Sewawa said. “Cycling is an expensive sport.

A standard bike costs around P50,000 without accessories and cycling attire. That is why we believe that in order for more youth to be attracted to the sport they have to be supported with equipment,” he added. Furthermore, Sewawa said the target is to have close to 300 participants from various categories taking part in the challenge.

There will be several race categories at the challenge, with registration fees ranging from P50 to P250. “Several clubs from as far as Jwaneng and Gaborone have confirmed their participation in the race.

The registration process is going very well, and I remain optimistic that we will meet our target. Registration closes next week Thursday. There will be several race categories at the challenge with the 120 kilometres elite category being the most prominent,” he said.

Sewawa noted that several sponsors such as Debswana, WERMS, MVA Fund, Kalcon, EH Construction, Grand Millennium, Pula Medical Aid, Thama Services and Multi-Tech, Veolia Water, Speed Factor, Sefalana, and Saltire have committed to support the event.
