Police officer, sister die in road mishap

The accident occurred when a Ford Ranger vehicle belonging to the 29-year-old female police officer that had the trio on board overturned after hitting another car when they were attempting to overtake near a traffic circle.

Jwaneng police station commander, Superintendent Thuso Basuti confirmed the incident stating that the accident occurred around 12noon near the circle.

Basuti said they had received a report from Kanye police alerting them of a certain Ford Ranger double cab vehicle that was speeding towards Jwaneng after its driver ignored police signals and refused to stop at Boatle and Kanye respectively.

“Our police attended the report but on arrival in Jwaneng the speeding driver also ignored police signals stopping her until the car was involved in an accident near the traffic circle. The driver, a female police officer was on uniform but not on duty when the accident occurred. She and her younger sister died on the spot while their friend sustained serious injuries and is currently hospitalised at Jwaneng Mine Hospital,” added Basuti.

Basuti said the officer had knocked from duty at 6 o'clock in the morning prior to the accident adding that there are suspescions that the trio were under the influence of alcohol but they are yet to confirm such reports since investigations into the matter are ongoing.
