The concern was revealed by Serowe police station commander, superintendent Poloko Oteng in an interview with The Monitor.

He indicated that they are recording two to three cases in a week of thieves stealing electric copper cables from homes. Oteng revealed that they have established that the criminals target unoccupied and vacant houses and cut electric cables that go from the electric pole to the house.

He added that looking at the frequency of the theft incidents, they suspect that the criminals might be having a market and the demand is high. “We suspect that they might be selling them in scarp yards in Palapye and Gaborone because there are cases in which some were arrested at the Dibete check point facing south with loads of copper cables.

I am pleading with people to consider leaving someone to occupy their houses rather than leaving them unoccupied for a very long time,” Oteng said.
