Divisional Traffic Officer for South Central, Assistant Commissioner Reginald Matlhaba told The Monitor the accident occurred at around 5:30am by Segoditshane traffic lights along Mandela road.

“We do not have full details on what really transpired, but an Audi had hit the Toyota RunX at the back,” he said.

“The driver of a Toyota RunX, a 31-year-old woman and her passenger, also a woman aged 30 died on the spot while the Audi driver and his passengers escaped with minor injuries.”

In another accident that occurred the same morning around 6:30am, Matlhaba revealed that a 51-year-old man who was a pedestrian was hit and killed by a bus along the Kudumatse road while trying to cross the road.

He further stated they have observed that accidents that continue to claim people’s lives in the build up areas of the city are on the rise despite the expectations of motorists to be driving at a minimum speed of 60km/h.

“This shows that motorists are driving at high speed in the middle of the city. One would wonder how accidents like this could kill people while drivers are expected to be observing junctions, traffic lights and road signs,” he said.
