Eager: Mpote says he is open to a full-time appointment

Mpote was appointed on an interim basis in February this year while the Botswana Football Association (BFA) is still looking for a substantive coach. The Zebras have posted a very strong performance at the ongoing COSAFA Cup in South Africa.

A youthful Zebras won three matches at the tournament before bowing out of the competition at the quarterfinal stage this week. Zebras also dominated against Zambia in the quarterfinals only to lose the match on penalties.

The Zebras have been relegated to the COSAFA plate where they face Senegal today. The association has been silent on the exact date it intends to appoint a head coach but there is no doubt that the performance of the national team has enhanced Mpote’s chances of earning a full-time contract at Lekidi.

This week the Orapa United coach reacted to growing links to the national team full-time job. “I will always be available for the nation whether on a full-time or interim basis. It is always an honour to serve my nation.

If those in charge feel my performance warrants a full-time contract, I will gladly accept the offer. I will always fight for my country,” Mpote said. “I want to contribute in whatever way I can to the national team and local football,” he added. Mpote’s chances will also be aided by the fact that there are reports that the association is broke and as a result cannot afford to hire a foreign coach.

Calls to give Mpote a job on a substantive basis as part of preparing for the 2027 AFCON have been swelling for some time. He is one of the most decorated local coaches and has often been lauded for his ability to develop players. Botswana will play Senegal in the plate cup semi-final and if they win, they will feature in the final on Sunday.

Meanwhile, after his COSAFA assignment, Mpote and his charges will not have time to rest. They will turn their attention to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying clash against Eswatini on July 23. The match will be played at Obed Itani Chilume Sports Complex.
