The centre is mandated to assist clients owning and operating SMEs through the provision of a buffet of services as the bank has realized the enormous role SMEs can play in creating employment and developing the country.

Speaking at the launch, Absa acting Managing Director Krishnan Menon said they recognise the critical role that SMEs play in national development.

“As Absa Bank Botswana, we consider ourselves responsible citizens and recognize the immense role we play in supporting Botswana and its people. We are excited to be launching the centre as it demonstrates our commitment to supporting the SME sector,” Menon said.

Absa Head of Business Banking Keletso Stimela, who has 23 years of experience working with SMEs, noted that the centre would cater to an array of customer needs such as providing safe storage of money, tailor-made product solutions, and business expertise.

Stimela said that SMEs stand to benefit a lot from the recently opened centre through networking and business club interactions, benchmarking trips, and interest-earning accounts such as investment accounts, fixed deposit, and call account.

On his part, Minister of Entrepreneurship Karabo Gare commended the bank for its continued efforts to economically strengthen SMEs to ensure that they become major players in the development and growth of the economy.

“As the Botswana government continues to call for economic diversification this is the time. We need SMEs the most. It is therefore imperative that we come together as the government and the private sector to mitigate the challenges SMEs face,” Gare said.

Gare further mentioned that he is confident that the SME Banking Centre launch is another step in the right direction towards active participation in the SME sector and the broader economy.
