Last week Tuesday, FCTVE students embarked on a four-day peaceful demonstration accusing the institution’s management of bad leadership. During the peaceful demonstration, the students issued a written petition for the principal to step down.

Amongst their many concerns were lack of accommodation, shortage of lecturers and protective clothing and other equipment for projects.

Maphakwane The Monitor that the students will be resuming their lessons on Monday after a successful meeting with the school management and the regional education director, Labani Mokgosi.

According to the FCTVE SRC president, their main issue was to meet with the regional director because they lost all hope in their school management system. “We met with the director together with school management on Friday and the meeting was very fruitful as we managed to come up with permanent solutions to most of our problems unlike in the past,” he said.

Maphakwane said that during the same meeting it was agreed that the work suits for mechanical and electrical engineering students will be distributed during the week.

He elaborated that the rest of the protective clothing will be ordered for the remaining batch of students in the same week.

“It was also resolved that SRC members are expected to be supervising and monitoring the distribution of the protective clothing. The same SRC leaders were awarded the roles to be part of the decision-making process when choosing the quality of protective clothing materials,” the FCTVE SRC president added.

The outspoken Maphakwane shared that it was also decided that the SRC should be part of the school board.

On other issues raised during the meeting such as meal allowance and extension period for the students, he said the director promised to give them feedback on Thursday.

For his part, Mokgosi confirmed that he met with the school management and student body representative. He said they managed to address issues such as personal protective wear for students as they are about to start their attachments.

The regional education director shared that it was agreed that both sides should be consulted when choosing protective clothing as per the requirements. Therefore, a decision was taken for SRC members to be part of the procurement committees.

He also shared that a decision was taken for SRC to be part of the school board so that they can be consulted on decisions or matters affecting the school.

Mokgosi assured The Monitor that on Monday everything will be back to normal.
