Confirming to be investigating the case, Mahalapye police station commander, Superintendent Omphile Malemenyane said the incident occurred at the suspect's residence in Mahalapye West after the deceased had visited her boyfriend for a sleep over.

Malemenyane said when narrating what transpired, the suspect who handed himself to the police after committing the offence, disclosed to have had a misunderstanding that led to a fight with his girlfriend after she received a suspicious message on her phone.

"Suspecting his woman was cheating, the boyfriend got furious, went outside and grabbed an axe and hacked his girlfriend with it on the head causing serious injuries that left her lying unconscious. The deceased was rushed to Mahalapye Hospital where she was confirmed dead on arrival by the doctors," he said.

Malemenyane added that the suspect who was arraigned before Mahalapye Magistrates' Court facing a single count of murder has been remanded in custody and will appear again for mention on 24th June,2022.

The senior police officer was concerned by passion killings in his policing area indicating to have recorded two murder cases in two weeks. He revealed that the murder incident follows another one that occurred recently at Kalamare village. This is a case in which a 31-year-old woman was also killed by her 33-year-old boyfriend over similar suspicions.

Malemenyane pleaded with partners to seek help when troubled than resorting to violence as women continue to lose their lives at the hands of their lovers.
