Women's tourney kicks off with P25,000 cash prize on offer

The Gaborone region champions, Double Action are in Pool A alongside, Cubs Sporting Club from Nhabe region, Boteti's Orapa All Stars and Kgatleng region champions, Royal Fighters. Kweneng region champions, Mexican Girls are in a much tougher group as they are pitted against Central region’s Green Lovers, Granada from Selebi-Phikwe, and Francistown United from the Francistown region in Pool B. The teams will play in a round-robin and the top two teams in each group will advance to the semi-finals to seek a spot in the tournament’s final. The group stage matches will be played on Friday and Saturday. The semi-finals and final of the tournament will be played on June 12.

The winners will pocket P25,000 the runners up will walk away with P15,000 while the third-placed team will take home P10,000. The tournament is the first of its kind in local football and it was made possible by the Botswana Football Association (BFA) and Diamond Trading Company Botswana’s P2.43 million partnership. The deal is in the first of three years. The national champions will, however, not represent the country at the CAF Women's Champions League. The BFA is currently screening interested teams in order to handpick the side that will compete at the regional qualifiers of the Champions League.
