FUB, BFL sign key players' agreement

BFL acknowledges that it has been difficult for clubs to provide players with health insurance which is why they have decided to take on the responsibility of providing one. During the signing ceremony at Lekidi Centre, BFL chairperson, Nicholas Zakhem said they acknowledge the dangers football players face. "The life of a football player is surrounded by injuries which is why we saw it fit to deal with this issue," he said. The agreement also acknowledges the lack of players' financial literacy hence the move to introduce pension funds to help players have something to fall back on after retirement. "This is an added advantage to provide welfare funds to players that have retired for various reasons such as age and injuries," he added.
The agreement also seeks to tackle the issue of club licensing and overdue payables to players. This is meant to avoid the abuse and exploitation of players. The agreement is seen as a welcome move in the right direction to address pressing issues facing football players in the country. FUB president, Onalethata Tshekiso applauded the BFL for consulting players when making decisions about their welfare. He said this was unlike in the past when decisions were made where players had little to no benefit from such.
