Khama’s younger brother and former president, Ian Khama, who is currently in a self-imposed exile in South Africa announced her passing earlier today but did not share details about the cause of death and funeral arrangements.

“It is with regret that I have to announce the passing away of our sister Jaqueline Tebogo, the firstborn to the late Sir Seretse Khama and Lady Ruth Khama. She departs leaving her two other brothers Tshekedi and Anthony, her two sons Dale and Marcus as well as her nephews, niece and grandchildren,” Ian posted on his Facebook page. The former president, who was scheduled to visit Monaco today with his younger brother and Serowe West legislator, Tshekedi Khama and return on May 30, has released no word on any change of plans as to whether they will cancel the trip.

Last month former president revealed that 13 out of 18 members of his family had fled the country as his feud with President Mokgweetsi Masisi deepened. Khama told South African broadcasters, SABC News that his family fled because Masisi had vowed that the family of Sir Seretse Khama must be driven out of Botswana. Ian at the time did not reveal whether his sister was among the 13 family members that fled the country.

The former president has been charged with 14 criminal offences, which include amongst others, unlawful possession of a firearm, receiving stolen property, procuring the registration of a firearm by false pretence, aiding and abetting unlawful possession of a firearm, and ownership of a firearm not registered under the Arms and Ammunition Act of 2018. He is set to appear in court on June 6 but has revealed that he has no intentions of coming back because his life was under threat. Now after the unfortunate death of their sister, it remains to be seen whether the Khama family will return to Botswana for the funeral of the eldest member of their family. Earlier this year Kgosi Kgafela Kgafela II didn’t return for the funeral of his mother and Bakgatla Ba Kgafela Queen Mother Kathleen Kgafela. Kgosi Kgafela fled Botswana to South Africa in 2012 after a warrant of arrest for charges issued against him over floggings.
