Police checkpoints help reduce weekend fatalities

Police have over time expressed deep concern over the increase in road fatalities since the beginning of the year.
To address the concerns, traffic police had set up drunk driving operations in and around Gaborone to reduce road deaths.
Deputy divisional traffic officer for South Central, Senior Superintendent Boiki Mojalemotho revealed that their weekend plan to have roadblocks in and around the city worked because unlike in past weekends they did not record fatal accidents.
“We had a number of roadblocks in and around the city and we managed to record zero road deaths last weekend,” he said.
“Moreover, unlike in the past weeks when we used to record more than 30 to 45 accidents, we only recorded 20 minor accidents last weekend.”
Mojalemotho stated that fatal road accidents that occur over the weekend remain a concern, especially since every week ends with a payday for some civil servants, hence the new initiative to reduce fatalities on the road.
