20-goal Sesinyi knocks on Zebras' door

On Wednesday, Sesinyi scored his 20th league goal this campaign when he converted from the spot in Galaxy’s 2-0 win over Mogoditshane Fighters. The goal has taken Sesinyi’s tally to 20 goals, becoming the first player to do so since the 2016–2017 season. Gaborone United’s (GU) forward, Thatayaone Kgamanyane was the last player to reach the 20-goal mark four seasons ago and he went to bag the top goal scorer’s award.
Sesinyi is now five goals away from breaking the highest league goals ever scored by a local. The record remains 25 goals set by Joel Mogorosi and Kekaetswe Moloi almost a decade ago whilst Terrence Mandaza’s 31 goals in one season remain out of reach with just three rounds of league football to be played. Sesinyi is now the most prolific local striker and should be among the first names when interim Zebras coach, Mogomotsi 'Teenage' Mpote announces his squad today. He is now two goals ahead of his closest rival, Kgamanyane in the race for the golden boot award while Extension Gunners’ Kabelo Babusi and Thero Setsile of GU follow behind with 15 and 14 goals respectively.
The trio was considered ahead of Sesinyi as the forward missed the last Zebras’ call up. Coach Mpote is expected to name the squad for the first two opening games for the 2023 AFCON qualifiers today. The coach will meanwhile face a goalkeeping headache as Sua Flamingoes’ Kenneth Mmoko has been ruled out of the rest of the season with an injury. The 22-year-old fractured his right arm in the Orange FA Cup’s quarterfinal tie against BDF XI. Mmoko is the third-best shot-stopper this season behind GU’s Goitseone Phoko and Kabelo Dambe of Township Rollers as he has an impressive 14 clean sheets in 22 games played in his debut elite league season.
Mpote is now without two goalkeepers as Dambe has retired from the national team. The coach will be boosted by the return of Zebras’ captain Thatayaone Ditlhokwe who has recovered from an injury. There have been impressive displays also from outside the country’s shores as Moshe 'Zim Dollar' Ndlovu has been on a starring role in Pretoria Callies’ push for promotion in the South African second-tier football. The Moroccan-based duo, Kabelo Seakanyeng and Tumisang Orebonye, is also enjoying the forms of their lives with Olympique Club de Khouribga. The Zebras will be away to Libya on June 1 before welcoming Tunisia at the Obed Itani Chilume Stadium on June 5.
