The driver of the Honda Fit and one of his three passengers died while the two others survived the accident with serious injuries. According to the police, the road mishap occurred on Saturday late afternoon near Choppies supermarket.

Divisional traffic officer for South Central, assistant commissioner, Reginald Matlhaba told The Monitor that the unlicensed 25-year-old driver of the speeding Honda Fit hit the pedestrian that was trying to cross the road, killing him instantly before hitting the truck parked metres away from the road.

“The 30-year-old pedestrian was the driver of the truck [involved in the accident] and had just parked it before trying to cross the road to the shops when he met his fate. After hitting the truck, the driver of the Honda Fit lost control of the car until it fell into a trench by the roadside,” Matlhaba said. Matlhaba further stated that the two passengers are currently fighting for their lives at Bokamoso Private Hospital.

Meanwhile, Mahalapye police are investigating an incident in which a 22-year-old man suspected to be the driver of a car that was involved in an accident was killed by another car while seeking help. No. 16 district traffic officer, superintendent Tuelo Komanyane said the accident occurred on Saturday at around 10pm near Bonwapitse along the A1 Highway.

“On arrival at the scene, we found a Toyota IST overturned metres away from the road with no one inside. We suspect that the deceased who was hit by a Nissan Navara might be the driver of the Toyota IST that had overturned metres away from the road. The 47-year-old driver of the Nissan Navara, who was heading south of the country from the north when the accident occurred, is currently in police custody helping the police with investigations,” Komanyane said.
