The trio was part of the Unik Construction team that was working at a watercourse near Mosope River when the soil caved in on them at around 11am, burying them alive. According to the police, the duo, both residents of Moshupa village, was trapped underground for at least an hour before their bodies were recovered.

Moshupa assistant police station commander, assistant superintendent Goitsemang Sekgabo said the deceased are a 33-year-old woman of Diboto ward and a 40-year-old man of Mmaseetsele ward in Moshupa. Sekgabo stated that the deceased met their fate when they were underground levelling the trench to install water pipes.

“It is a sad tragedy but luckily one of them, a 47-year-old man of Jerusalem ward in Moshupa escaped death by a whisker sustaining a fractured left leg. He is currently hospitalised at Kanye Seventh-day Adventist Hospital. It took the police close to an hour to recover their bodies from underground because they were forced to use shovels to dig out the fallen soil,” Sekgabo said.

Meanwhile, Sekgabo said they are investigating a break-in incident that occurred on Friday night in which a bar in Mmaditswelo ward in Moshupa was broken into where goods worth P26,000 were stolen.

He said investigations into the matter are ongoing to locate and arrest suspects who are still at large.

“The three unknown men broke into a bar and stole alcohol, a television set, and music instruments all at the value of P26,000. We do not have any leads as yet but investigations into the matter are ongoing,” he said.

Sekgabo further pleaded with the business community in his policing area to tighten their security by ensuring that their premises are safe at all times.

“I am pleading with the business community to help us (police) to fight crime by being security conscious. Failure to put security devices on the property proved that the business community was not taking issues of security seriously. They should at least hire a security guard or install CCTV cameras to monitor people’s movements in and around their businesses,” he said.
