Sekhutlhwana Sa Bannye’s cultural event aims to teach Setswana

A popular children’s radio show, Sekhutlhwana Sa Bannye, which airs on Duma FM every morning will host its very first annual and zonal children’s cultural event on May 7 at Rakola lands near Gabane.
According to the event chairperson Thabiso Boefelo, the occasion is an extension of a radio programme as they believe it (radio program) has limited time. Boefelo said they planned to take it to the kids now in a practical way not theoretical, as it has always been the case. He added that they also realised that the results of children in schools were continuously dropping particularly for Setswana language.
“The event target children who are 16 years and below but this does not deny other children entry who do not fall within the age range. It will help them to develop the love for Setswana language as it targets to provide cultural edutainment that they are not used to and which is also practical. The aim is to give them something different to the classroom system they are used to,” he explained.
Boefelo also pointed out that parents would also learn, as they did not know other things adding that they would have the chance to teach and interact with their kids. He also said there is a Setswana sayings that, “letlhogontsho le ruta letlhogotshweu and that botlhale jwa phala bo tswa phalaneng” meaning parents can also learn from their children.
Even though the event is free entry, there will be sale of Setswana traditional food while only sponsors of the event will be accorded stalls. The event will be made up of cultural education for kids, traditional cuisine, traditional games, music, poetry, performances and horse entertainment.
Boefelo added that they expect up to 200 kids to attend the event. Among those expected to grace the event include Members of Ntlo ya Dikgosi, village elders, area Member of Parliament, Ministry of Education, Botswana Open University Vice Chancellor, Daniel Tau, companies, and visitors from neighbouring countries. The event’s main guest is Kgosi Oscar Mosielele of Bakgatla ba ga Mmanaana who is also Sekhutlwana Sa Bannye patron.
