The Mares will be making their maiden AWCON appearance in Morocco from July 2 to 23.

Addressing a media briefing on Tuesday morning, the BFA chief executive officer, Mfolo Mfolo appealed to the private sector to extend a helping hand to the team.

He said the BFA is currently cash-strapped and a slight percentage of the bulk will be sourced from the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development.

Mfolo said, despite the government’s involvement a huge gap remains.

“The technical committee met in March and they developed a plan which has been adopted by the executive committee. The plan is on how we will develop these beautiful women for AWCON. This is not about participation but we want to be counted. So we need the money more than ever before. The cost of the plan is P7.2 million, which we do not have. We need players from the private sector, the business sector to help us fund this plan.”

“We are still recovering (from financial woes), is it not a good thing to say but it is in the public. But part of the budget is taken care of by the ministry through the (Botswana National Sport) Commission. So we still need a hand from the business sector to help prepare this team,” Mfolo said. Today, the Mares received a donation of over P20,000 from Aucillia Letshwiti, spouse to BFA president, Maclean.

The donation is leisure footwear and shirts for 33 members of both the playing and technical teams.

The Mares will know their opponents at the AWCON finals when the draw is conducted on April 25 in Morocco.
