The championship is set for April 30 and May 1 in Khawa. Khawa500 has been added to the BMS national off-road championship calendar in partnership with the Botswana Tourism Organisation (BTO) and the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development.

The Khawa500 will hold the national championship doubleheader as it hosts rounds three and four of the competition. The event replaces the 1000 TDR, which has been moved to Upington, South Africa for the second consecutive year.

The TDR had been popular amongst the fans and riders with the best attendance for a sports event. It also presented competitors an opportunity to earn double points in the national championship, racing in a doubleheader over two days in the 1000km event. This time around, the local doubleheader’s distance has been cut by half, as the riders will race for just 500km over two days. “Khawa Dune Challenge will be part of the Botswana Motorsport National Championship rounds three and four and the points will count towards the championship,” part of the statement from BTO reads.

The Khawa Dune Challenge has been a rather recreational event for motorsport enthusiasts, and it will be the first time to add competitive action. Meanwhile, the BMS will hold round two of the national championship with the Kopong200 to be held tomorrow in Kopong, 30km north of Gaborone.

Wade Den is currently in the lead of the elite OR1 class after winning the first round at the 2Rivers Metsimotlhabe200 held in March.
