Khama has been out of the country since October last year and it remains unclear as to when he will return.
BFA chief executive officer, Mfolo Mfolo chose not to comment on Khama’s position in what could be considered a ‘touchy’ matter.
“I will rather not comment on the matter,” was Mfolo’s brief response. Mmegi Sport had inquired if the former president was still the patron and whether his absence affected the discharge of a patron’s duties.
Khama said he remained in the position, stating his absence was temporary.
“Yes (I remain the BFA patron),” Khama said yesterday.
'It (my absence) does not affect it one way or the other just as my positions on anything else.”
He said he was not contemplating quitting the position, despite his current situation.
“No, I don’t because it is temporary (my absence) but that does not prevent the association withdrawing my patronage if they wish to,” he said. He has also served as Botswana Cricket Association and Botswana Volleyball Association patron.
Due to his football passion, Khama was installed as BFA patron long before he joined politics. The patron’s role is to lend credibility and support although they don’t play an active role in the running of the organisation.
