Last weekend, rumours circulated alleging Makgophe had been fired with Ramakorwane appointed as the new police commissioner.

Asked to comment on the allegations, the minister of Defence, Justice and Security Kagiso Mmusi dismissed the rumour mill as false and misleading.

“There is nothing like that, Makgophe is currently on suspension as investigations on his recent detention by the Directorate of Intelligence and Security (DIS) are still ongoing. I can confirm that in Makgophe’s absence, the deputy commissioner, Ramakorwane, has been appointed the acting police commissioner,” Mmusi said.

The DIS recently detained Makgophe allegedly to find answers on licences of hidden weapons of war he supposedly granted to former president, Ian Khama.

Before Makgophe’s arrest, the intelligence agency had arrested and detained Ian Khama’s twin brothers, Anthony and Tshekedi, as well as the latter’s wife Thea Khama for questioning on the same matter.

One could wonder if Makgophe would ever resume office following videos of what had transpired.

Makgophe’s arrest shocked the nation and left members of the public with mixed feelings with the majority condemning his detention, especially that he is not an ordinary person but a top cop with extensive law enforcement experience.

Some people stated the DIS could have summoned him to its office and handled the matter professionally not have a display of what transpired as if they wanted to embarrass Makgophe.

Moreover, members of the public said what transpired could damage the relationship between the DIS and the police.
