The unit was launched last week Wednesday at the institution’s Tlokweng campus. According to the Programme Coordinator Barati Montshiwa the Leadership and Management Development programme is scheduled to roll out in two weeks. Montshiwa explained that the programme entails short courses that range from people management, strategic leadership, effective communication, occupational health and safety to clinical up-skilling. She also said COVID-19 has exposed the need for strategic leadership especially in the healthcare sector.

“Nurses, who were at the frontline of the fight against the pandemic were severely exposed. Doctors and nurses are technically trained professionals, but with no management skills, so the programme would expose them to management, skills, clinical side as well as education and training,” she said. “We are giving organisations the opportunity to give themselves a competitive edge through short courses. So it is also an initiative for you to up skill yourself themselves, to become an employer of choice, more strategic high productivity and increased revenue especially for private clinics that need to bring in efficiency in their operations,” she further said.

Montshiwa said at Boitekanelo, they believe that they have a role in the improvement of the country’s healthcare system. “We believe that a healthy and skilled nation is a productive one. The Ministry of Health was allocated the lion’s share of the budget. So, it is not government’s mission alone to advance those healthcare outcomes. The private sector also have a to come on board, and the pandemic has taught us that we can only do that through the use of technology in the management of disasters,” she said. The institution's founder Dr Tiro Mampane, said the programme is currently focused on short courses geared towards mainly leadership and development. He explained that all the courses offered through Centre for Professional Development Studies has been accredited by the Human Resource Development Council (HRDC).
