This year’s celebration theme is, “The French language, connecting for action”. This celebration week provides an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the French language; its diversity, influence and impact locally and globally.

Alliance Française assistant librarian and cultural coordinator, Lesego Keeng told Arts & Culture in an interview that the annual Francophone event celebrates French speaking.

She explained that Francophone means ‘those who speak French' especially as their first language. “The week has been celebrated since March 1988 and we are still continuing that tradition. It is a week of celebrating the French language in all its diversity,” she added. Ahead of the international women’s day, the Alliance Française on Wednesday screened Maman Colonelle, which stars female law enforcement officer fighting for women and children's rights.

There was also a panel discussion in honour of women themed break the bias.

For her part, the director of Alliance Française, Ampelique Saverino said Chef Laurent Chauvet, a French chef from SA, will host private and public cooking classes and another session will be held on March 12, 2022. “Tomorrow visual artist Kenny Ketshotseng will instruct a painting workshop, which is open to the public at a fee of P250 per session.

Another thing is that we will be launching our book club on March 18 and this is an initiative to encourage reading and promote the use of French language, especially for language students in order to improve fluency,” she revealed.

Saverino also disclosed that among the major activities meant to promote Rhumba music, they will host a music concert featuring legendary guitarist Kapenda Katuta, Ngwasuma Stars and legendary local Rhumba artist Alfredo Mos as a guest artist.
