Nine robbery suspects have been killed in a fire exchange in Phase 2, Gaborone that left one other injured, police have revealed.

This incident follows the Minister of Defence, Justice and Security Kagiso Mmusi’s recent bold statement instructing the police to "do whatever it takes to eliminate crime" at the recent 48th Senior Police Officers conference. The shootout followed after an armed robbery that occurred earlier today in the Main Mall.

In a media release, the Botswana Police Service’s (BPS) public relations officer, assistant commissioner Dipheko Motube revealed that the deceased robbery suspects are Batswana and South Africans aged between 20 and 35.

“Eleven armed men attacked and robbed a Security Systems cash-in-transit motor vehicle of over P986,000 at the Main Mall this morning. The robbers fled the scene and were, later on, followed and confronted by the police and an exchange of fire ensued resulting in fatal injuries to some of the robbers. Police have in the process arrested a 30-year-old Motswana woman who was in the company of the robbers,” further read the statement from Motube.

Moreover, Motube said that four pistols and an AK-47 assault rifle were found in their possession whilst an undisclosed amount of cash was recovered from the robbers.
