This comes at a critical time when the party is heading for Gaborone Bonnington South constituency's Bophirima ward by-election, which writ will be announced soon. Bophirima ward councillor Kagiso Mongwaketse's passing last month left the council seat vacant.

According to Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) Act, a by-election should be held within three months after the death or resignation of a councillor. Party insiders say there is no peace in the area and efforts to reconcile some members have failed. “The members are failing to cooperate and the area MP has tried to reconcile them but the situation has not changed. The problem is that some members claim that he is taking sides even if he does not. Many might resign from the branch committee because they are not happy. It's unfortunate that differences within the branch committee turn this way when we are heading for a by-election next month.

This might affect the election outcome,” the party insider revealed. When contacted for a comment, Mooki said he could not speak on internal matters. “I can confirm that I have resigned from the committee to become an ordinary member. I am happy with my decision,” he said. His resignation letter dated February 16, 2022, reads; “My resignation is sorely based on personal reasons and it does not in any way imply that I am dissatisfied with my work.

I appreciate the opportunity I have been given to work as part of the winning team at Gaborone Bonnington South. It wasn’t an easy road but we managed with teamwork to grab all council seats and the MP seat in the 2019 general election.” He, however, said he will continue to serve the BDP as an ordinary member. Gaborone Bonnington South constituency has six wards, Bophirima included.
