Gaborone West Police Station commander, Superintendent Knight Molosiwa told The Monitor that people who walk alone at night are at risk of being attacked and robbed.

He said the incidents are most prevalent in passages amongst the streets and near shopping malls.

“On a daily basis, we receive reports of people being attacked and robbed while walking in the streets of Gaborone mostly at night and late in the evenings. These criminals are always armed with sharp objects like knives, scissors, which they use to threaten their victims and demand money and mobile phones,” Molosiwa said.

“Gaborone streets are no longer safe hence walking alone at night is risky. I encourage people to consider walking in numbers so that others scream for help if such instances happen.”

He added that even motorists have not been spared as they also drive in fear and no longer enjoy the comfort of their vehicles.

He stated these criminals break car windows at the traffic lights, speed humps, junctions and steal people’s valuables like cellphones, laptops and money.
