Soldiers, police in shooting incident

'Suspecting that he was driving a stolen vehicle, the patrol team consisting of members of the police and Botswana Defence Force (BDF) followed him. Their efforts to stop the driver who was driving at high speed were futile; hence they shot at his vehicle tyres. But unfortunately they missed their target and hit him on his two right toes,' explained Assistant Superintendent Chakalisa Nkoni of Kutlwano police. He said after the shooting, the motorist was admitted at Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital where he is in a stable condition. 'I have visited him at the hospital and he is very stable. We have interviewed him to hear his side of the story.'

He said the motorist did not realise that he was injured on the toes until he stopped at his home. He explained that the victim was not under the influence of alcohol. He disclosed that they are investigating the incident. He could not disclose the names of the victim but Mmegi can reveal that he hails from Mmadinare and is an employee of one of the mines in Francistown. The shooting occurred on Saturday morning at the Somerset Extension location next to Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Church.
