Let’s monitor our children

Children drown every rainy season because they would sneak out and go swimming even those who are not familiar with the art of swimming.

There has also been reports of children who drowned while swimming in the other parts of the country. Also, we had reports of some children who died while others got lost attempting to go to their parents from boarding schools. Another disturbing incidents are those of children always see loitering at shopping malls soliciting for money from strangers.

We do not blame the parents or anyone for what happened to children. Rather, we urge the nation to take this as a lesson well learnt and put in an extra measures in looking after the young ones.

Therefore, it is important for parents to know where their kids are at all times. We have heard of people who at times abduct the children, missing children, thus meaning that if they are not on sight, we should be worried as parents and look for them as soon as possible.

We live in a busy world where some parents hardly spend time with their children and in turn do not know what the needs of the children are.

We urge parents to establish relationships with neighbours so they can help look out for one another’s children. We should go back to the crossroads and know that children belong to all of us. When we see children playing in a dangerous manner or doing anything, we should be able to reprimand them and take them to their homes safely if need be.

If children from a young age grow up knowing that only their parents can reprimand them, they can end up in danger or doing drugs and other bad things.

They will not fear doing all these bad things in front of people who are not their blood parents and even at schools. We further urge school communities and centres such as SOS to also be watchful of children under their care. They should also engage other stakeholders including parents, social workers and the police when there are any problems. Parenting is for all of us; let’s do it together and improve our society.
