The exercise was supposed to be completed last year. “We are hoping to have concluded the discussions at the level of Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development (MYSC), BNSC, Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC) and National Sport Associations (NSAs) in late January or early February 2022 at which point we will make a determination of how to proceed with the restructuring," Serufho said. This publication is informed that some employees are contemplating leaving the Commission due to uncertainty.

Some directors have already left, while others are on short-term contracts. It is unclear how many employees will be affected by the exercise expected to result in job losses.

Meanwhile, BNSC Act amendments are set to be finalised by Parliament during the July and August sitting. At the last Annual General Meeting (AGM), BNSC board chairperson, Marumo Morule informed the NSAs that consultations have resumed at MYSC to agree on the governance model for Botswana Sport for purposes of efficient and effective operations, economic and stream-lining of functions to eliminate duplication. “A lot of ground has been covered with the involvement of MYSC, BNOC and NSAs.

Consultations are expected to be concluded by January,” he said. Morule also said discussions are ongoing regarding the rationalising of BNSC and BNOC. He further explained that the process is being done to avoid two successive reviews of the Act over a short period.

He said the review of the Act would resume on February 2022 with the final draft to be taken to Parliament during the July/August seating. Morule stated during the 2020/2021 financial year a temporary funding model was adopted. “The criteria used were based on the contribution to BNSC Vision 2028 and 2036. NSAs were also categorised as follows: high impact sport being netball, volleyball, football, athletics and softball.

The rest of the codes are divided into middle high impact sport (17), middle impact sport (12) and low impact (4),” he said. Morule said the bulk of the funding went to high impact and middle high impact NSAs.
