Speaking during BNSC the Annual General Meeting (AGM) last week, the board chairman, Marumo Morule said consultations have resumed at the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development (MYSC) to agree on governance model for Botswana Sport for purposes of efficient and effective operations, economic and stream-lining of functions to eliminate duplication. “A lot of ground has been covered with the involvement of MYSC, Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC) and National Sport Associations (NSAs). Consultations are expected to be concluded by January,” he said. Morule also said discussions are ongoing regarding rationalising BNSC and BNOC.

He further explained that the process is being done to avoid two successive review of the Act over a short period. He said the review of the Act would resume on February 2022 with the final draft to be taken to Parliament during the July/August seating. Morule informed the NSAs that during the 2020/2021 financial year, a temporary funding model was adopted. “The criteria used was based on the contribution to BNSC Vision 2028 and 2036. NSAs were also categorised as follows: high impact sport (six), middle high impact sport (17), middle impact sport (12) and low impact (4),” he said. Morule said the bulk of the funding went to high impact and middle high impact NSAs.

Meanwhile, Morule said funding for the Commission from the government was cut by P40 Million, which led to reduction in all NSAs allocations. He explained that NSAs with full time staff or facilities were assisted with extra funding from MYSC. “The government subversion for 2021/2022 is likely to be reduced. NSAs are encouraged to mobilise their own resources,” Morule said.

The BNSC chief executive officer (CEO), Tuelo Serufho said plans are underway to resume school sport in January. He said discussions between MYSC and BNSC are ongoing to facilitate organised sport in public schools. He said the Task Team's report on School Sport was shared with NSAs in November and comments are yet to be received.
