It was, however, a very slow start into the final until Ototeng Dintwa had a first shot at goal in the seventh minute but was saved by Goitseone Phoko. GU took the lead on the 13th minute as Obonwe Maome beat the goalkeeper to the bottom corner with a low taken free-kick. Looking for a second goal, Maome once again had a snapshot from inside the box but Katlego Mbise was well positioned to collect on the 20th minute. The Reds got their second from the spotkick after Thatayaone Kgamanyane was brought down inside the penalty area. Kekaetswe Moloi slotted in on the 35th minute. Majatlhaga had to deal with a forced injury situation as Condry Masire was replaced by Kakanyo Kethubile with just two minutes to the break.
With a two goal cushion, the Reds were one foot in at the half time. It was similar start in the second half as both sides could not direct a shot at goal in the early minutes of the half. Goitseone Phoko gave the Reds a scare on the 62nd minute as he showed some clumsiness in dealing with a cross. However, the ball could only hit the upright. Substitute Joel Mogorosi tried with a header on the 73rd but Mbise was there to save. With a minute to time, Karabo Phiri made it 3-0 as he squeezed the ball between the advancing goalkeeper's legs to send the GU fans into frenzy. The assured display by the Reds led them to their record seventh FA Cup title.
The team's coach, Innocent Morapedi was in jubilant mood but also lauded the opposition for giving his side a 'test' on the night. "Let me recognise the worthy opponents, they really gave what we wanted in terms of playing. They did test our character, and it was really tested. So I was impressed, we wanted to bring it home and live to the team's slogan 'the money machine' and I am happy we did," he said. His opposite number, Nelson Olebile felt the run up to the final needed a balance as his side played a league match in the midweek while the opposition did not.
