It is not a crime to have fun as long as one’s having fun does not infringe on other people’s rights to safety amongst others. Some people when consuming alcoholic beverages tend to exhibit unbecoming behaviours, for example, hosting parties and playing loud music in residential areas, while other citizens are trying to rest.

The other commonality with rascals hiding behind the having fun ‘banner’ is speeding on the road, thus endangering both their lives and those of other motorists.

There is yet another emerging trend that is troubling, and one that promoters need to act on fast. Most revellers during music festivals completely ignore COVID-19 protocols, being social distancing and wearing of masks. While, the end of the State of Emergency eased restrictions, the government has always cautioned people that the fight against the spread of COVID-19 continues. It is understandable that the festive season is an exciting time for many people, however let’s have our fun in a responsible manner that will not put our lives and the lives of others in danger.

We need to normalise COVID-19 protocols like regularly washing our hands, sanitising, and keeping a safe distance between the next person and ourselves! Some fun lovers usually make excuses that one cannot scream and sing along with a mask on. Well, for your safety and the safety of others, you can.

You will too if you value your life and that of others! Why is it that in meetings, people can give presentations while wearing their masks? The same can apply at entertainment spots.

Car accidents have also become a major concern, people have decided to throw caution to the wind, and have decided to use turn roads into their playground. There is a Setswana saying, ‘monate o hela ka bosula’ and that is usually and especially true for situations where people act recklessly. Let’s not be reminded that we should not drink and drive! It is your life and not the police officer’s life! Don’t get behind the wheel drunk, with your only worry being not being caught by law enforcement officers. Your first concern should actually be your life! Let’s enjoy the festive season responsibly!
