“DIS raided my house last night (Friday) in my absence and searched it without a warrant. I have been informed by a source they have been planting things there to implicate me. That is why they went at night,” Khama told the media from South Africa where he has been since last week.

Khama has as far back as four months ago told this publication that the DIS had plans to plant weapons at his properties so the agency could implicate him.

DIS public relations officer, Edward Robert in a short response denied that they raided Khama’s property. “The Directorate has not raided the residence of former president Khama.

The allegations are without substance. Our conduct is at all times subject to the dictates of the law,” he said.

A source has since dismissed Khama’s claims stating that the DIS only went there to investigate an incident at their armoury housed at Khama’s premises.

“While changing shifts recently, one of DIS officers at Khama’s residence discovered that there were some weapons which were not part of the armoury that were found there. The DIS officers went there to inspect and seal the armoury and not his house as part of its investigations,” the source said.

Quizzed further if indeed he was raided, Khama said: “They did. It is a fact. My lawyers even went there. Even my private security was there”.

Tebogo Tladi of Ramalepa Attorneys said they got there late. “Yes, they went to his residence and entered the armoury. We are not privy to what went on in there as they were not accompanied by anyone,” he said.

The DIS, in late October, obtained search warrants for Khama, former spy chief Isaac Kgosi and Sehunelo Khunou. They had stated in their application that they believed the trio could be in possession of DIS weapons. Kgosi has since been charged with possession of, amongst other things, Botswana Defence Force and DIS clothing as well as ammunition.
