Selebi-Phikwe police have launched a manhunt to locate and arrest the stepfather who was working as a herdsman at Lekgolwe cattlepost.

Confirming to be investigating the double murder incident, the district Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officer, detective Superintendent Obert Stone said the horrific incident occurred on Saturday night at Lekgolwe cattlepost located between Mathathane and Tsetsebjwe villages.

Stone told Mmegionline to have received the report on Saturday night around 22:30hrs.

"We received a report that two children, a three-year-old boy and one-year girl were found dead after their mother and stepfather were involved in a misunderstanding. It is alleged that the suspect who fled the scene following the double murder visited his girlfriend that fateful night and found her sleeping with her mother and her two children and requested to see her and the mother went out but after sometime, the mother heard her screaming for help, " he said.

Further narrating what transpired, Stone said the grandmother went outside the house to check what was happening and she saw her daughter running for her dear life with the boyfriend in full flight. Stone further stated that the grandmother told the police that she then followed her daughter only to return and find her grandchildren lying lifeless in a pool of blood.

"We do not know what really transpired, but we suspect that the stepfather wanted to kill his girlfriend but after falling to achieve his mission, he returned and found the children alone and killed them by suffocating them taking out his anger on them and fled the crime scene. We have launched a manhunt to locate and arrest the suspect who hails from Palapye so that he can help us with investigations," Stone said.
