According to the recent GFDHMT public notice, the three-day drive-through COVID-19 vaccination campaign will be held at Obert Itani Chilume Sports Complex (OICSC).

The public statement further reads that proceedings will start at 08:00 hours until 16:30 hours using the Johnson and Johnson vaccine.

In an interview with Mmegionline, GFDHMT acting coordinator Dr Gotsileene Monamodi said that the drive through vaccination initiative will be targeting about 1,000 people per day which will give an overall of 3000 for the three day vaccination campaign.

He noted that the number will be an addition to the people vaccinated at their regular sites that are still operational.

So far, GFDHMT acting coordinator has revealed that they have computed the estimated target population (18 years and above) for Greater Francistown to be 131,000 people. He added that those that are partially vaccinated are 63,400 and those fully vaccinated stands at 45,528 people.

Dr Monamodi shared that analysis by age group strata shows the highest coverage to be those over 55 years.

Therefore, he said that the rationale of the campaign is for them to reach out to the age group of less than 40 years whose percentage coverage is lower.

Dr Monamodi added: “Our analysis has proven that coverage in this age strata is not satisfactory. We hope this strategy will encourage people to vaccinate as it is relatively quicker and convenient.”

Furthermore, he highlighted that the drive through will have three phases of pre vaccination thus, screening, vaccination and observation. He added that they chose to use the OICSC due to its capacity as it can cater for all the three phases.

Dr Monamodi further explained: “All these processes need a lot of space for the vehicles hence the only space that met the criteria to be able to accommodate all the three processes was OICSC.We appreciate the challenge of distance and we will continue to engage for alternative spaces.”
