Constable ‘Sexually Assaults’ Minor

The incident would likely paint a negative image of the police service and law enforcement agents, who have been finding it hard in recent years to counter a growing number of sexual assault, rape and defilement cases around the country.

Botswana Police Service (BPS) public relations officer, assistant commissioner Dipheko Motube confirmed the investigation against the constable this week. “The incident was reported to the police on October 24. The charges that will be laid against him will be determined after the investigations have been completed.
At the moment it is safe to say that we are investigating allegations that he (constable) sexually abused his minor [step]child,” said Motube, who would not be drawn into discussing the matter further as investigations are at a preliminary stage. According to sources, the incident was reported to the police after the 13-year-old narrated her ordeal to her schoolmates.
The sources said the victim had told her colleagues that she wants to go far away from home after her Primary School Leaving Examination because she was tired of being sexually abused by her stepfather.
Her colleagues reported the matter to their class teacher who then engaged the school management, who then approached the police. Sources further indicated that the girl claimed that her stepfather started abusing her when she was doing Standard 5, while at age 11.
