Details however, remain sketchy regarding the death of the officer who recently shot himself dead whilst on duty.

Confirming the incident, the Botswana Police Service (BPS) public relations officer, Assistant Commissioner Dipheko Motube said investigations into the matter are ongoing to establish what really transpired.

“Yes, the 34-year-old police constable stationed at Letlhakeng police station shot himself dead with a rifle on Sunday morning whilst on duty. We do not know what led to the officer’s action and investigations into the matter are ongoing to establish the cause,” Motube said.

Asked how the officer managed to get hold of the rifle as such instruments are authorised by senior police officers, Motube said, “The officer was on duty, that is only what I can confirm,” Motube said cutting the conversation short.

However, Mmegi has learnt that the officer allegedly attempted to rape his female colleague something that is feared could have influenced his actions. In another twist of events it is also alleged that the officer was involved in a heated argument with his section leader prior to committing suicide.
