Central District police investigates double murder, suicide

Officer Commanding, Senior Superintendent Paul Oketsang said the incidents occurred on Friday and Saturday at Masenyane cattle posts in the outskirts of Serule village and at Mmantshadidi lands in the outskirts of Palapye respectively.

Oketsang said in an incident that occurred on Friday night, a 30-year old man is in police custody facing a single count of murder for allegedly killing his 37- year- old brother over a P200 debt at Masenyane lands.

"We have established that the brothers got into a misunderstanding when the younger brother was demanding his P200 debt. They got into a fight that led to the older brother's death. Through our preliminary investigations we have established that the younger brother grabbed a big log and hit his older brother on the head," he said.

Oketsang said the brother was rushed to Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital where he was hospitalized and succumbed to the injuries on Sunday morning. The senior officer stated that the suspect will be arraigned for murder before Selibe Phikwe Magistrates Court on Monday.

In another incident that occurred on Saturday at Mmantshadidi lands, a 35-year-old man stabbed his 25-year-old girlfriend of Makolojwane ward in Serowe to death with a knife twice and escaped the crime scene.

He said a manhunt was launched to locate and arrest the suspect but unfortunately he was on Sunday morning found hanging from a tree in the bush.

Oketsang pleaded with lovers not to resolve disputes by fighting but rather to seek help when troubled.

Oketsang said the Gender Based Violence (GBV) related cases which include murder, rape, threat-to-kill and unlawful wounding remains a concern. He stated that this year already they have recorded 15 GBV related cases as compared to 30 cases last year and 31 cases in 2019.
