Goodhope Police Station commander, Superintendent Batshwari Gaobatelwe said the tragedy, which left students reeling in shock, was reported on Friday.

“Last Friday afternoon we received a call about a student who was found by other male students when cleaning the dormitories hanging from unoccupied dormitory rafters. The deceased who is from Kopong village was a boarding student,” he said.

Gaobatelwe revealed that through their preliminary investigations they established that the lad had on Thursday night been accused by his fellow students to having had stolen a mobile phone belonging to another.

“It is alleged that his fellow students had instructed him to return the phone the following day. However, the deceased’s dormitory sleeping mates said on Friday early morning at around 3am he woke up, took a bucket as if he were going to fetch hot water and never returned,” he said.

He said after waking up, his sleeping mates tried to search for him to no avail but failed to report the matter to the school management.

Gaobatelwe stated that worried about his whereabouts, another student who is his relative phoned the deceased’s parents at Kopong and asked if he is home or not because he was nowhere to be found.

“The parents reported the matter to the school management. Whilst still trying to locate him, the school management received a report that he was found hanging from unoccupied dormitory rafters at around 10am and reported the matter to the police. The unoccupied dormitory does not have a ceiling and the young man used a rope to commit suicide.”

Gaobatelwe said the students and school management are reeling in shock following the lad’s death, especially that he was a reserved person.
