BNSC directors get contract extensions

There was speculation that director-sport development, Bobby Gaseitsiwe was in line to be appointed the Botswana Athletics Association (BAA) chief executive officer, as the athletics body prepares to have a fully-fledged secretariat. BNSC chief executive officer (CEO), Tuelo Serufho told Mmegi Sport that they are yet to start the restructuring exercise.
He explained that the directors whose contracts were due to expire have been given extensions. When asked about the term of the extensions and when the BNSC restructuring would commence, Serufho said they have decided to delay the restructuring until later in the year when it would be clear what reorganisation would happen at the level of the commission and the Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC). “This reorganisation may affect how the commission would be structured going forward,” he said.
The proposed structure would have both BNSC and BNOC in existence, albeit with significantly revised roles, with the BNSC being the Apex Sport body for Botswana. The current BNOC will transform to Botswana National Olympic and Paralympic Committee (BNOPC) and all National Sport Associations (NSA) will affiliate to it. BNSC will focus on providing strategic direction and regulation of sport as opposed to implementation. “We are in the middle of a consultative process. So far the BNSC and BNOC have had two sessions with the NSAs. Between the BNSC and BNOC boards, several meetings have been held,” Serufho said. He said they are making good progress and soon they will be taking the process to the next level that includes consultants with international bodies amongst others.
The proposed structure would see the BNSC responsible for the National Sport and Recreation Policy implementation, implementation of National Sport and Recreation Strategy, registration of NSAs, regulation of sport and recreation, facility development and management, among others. The BNOPC will be responsible for affiliating and keeping a register of all affiliated bodies, coordinating sport and recreation programmes, affiliating to international multi-sport bodies and facilitate Botswana’s competition at events under their auspices. The BNSC will also have powers to register NSAs without them having to register with the Register of Societies.
